Synastry — reading the compatibility of two charts
Not 'Aries plus Scorpio equals hard'. Real compatibility lives in the inter-aspects and the house overlays.
"I'm a Scorpio, he's an Aries — are we compatible?" It is the question that always comes up, and it is almost always the wrong one. Real astrological compatibility is not read between two signs — it is read between two whole charts.
That exercise is called synastry. It is not a prediction of the relationship. It is a reading of the dynamics that set in when two charts meet. Here is what it actually looks at.
What synastry is
Synastry is the comparison of two complete birth charts. You lay the two skies over each other and look at how they speak: where they reinforce, where they collide, where they ignore each other.
It applies to any kind of relationship. Romantic synastry is the best known, but you can just as well run the synastry of two business partners, two friends, a parent and child, yourself and your therapist. Wherever two charts interact, synastry has something to say.
What it is not: a compatibility test with a score out of ten. No couple is "perfectly compatible" or "completely incompatible." Synastry shows zones of flow, zones of tension, grounds of complementarity, and blind spots. It is a tool for reading a bond, not a verdict.
What synastry actually looks at
Three broad dimensions structure a synastry reading.
The inter-aspects. The angles one person's planets form with the other's. A's Sun trine B's Moon is very different from A's Sun square B's Moon. Inter-aspects describe how the psychic functions of the two charts talk to each other.
Some inter-aspects are synastry classics. Sun to Moon between two charts is the identity–emotion axis (often called "the traditional couple"). Venus to Mars is the axis of attraction, desire, and flirtation. Saturn to Venus is the axis of commitment and the structure of the bond.
The house overlays. When you place A's planets onto B's houses (and vice versa), you see which areas of B's life A's presence will be felt in. If A's Moon falls in B's fourth house, A activates the ground of home for B. If A's Mars falls in B's tenth, A pushes B on career.
The sensitive points. Beyond the planets, you look at the rising signs, the lunar nodes, the midpoints. A rising that touches the other's Sun, lunar nodes that cross — these are "karmic" markers in the sense that they often point to bonds that exceed the present episode.
Why compatibility by sign doesn't work
Reducing a relationship to "your sign against theirs" impoverishes the subject dramatically. Two Scorpios can be utterly incompatible. An Aries and a Libra — officially "opposites" — can live a smooth story for thirty years.
The reason is simple. The Sun sign says nothing about the other planets. An Aries Sun with a Cancer Moon and a Pisces rising has almost nothing in common with an Aries Sun with a Sagittarius Moon and a Capricorn rising. You can feel a thousand times more in tune with a Virgo whose Moon and rising match yours than with another Aries Sun whose whole chart opposes you.
Magazines announcing that "Leo plus Aquarius is the classic opposition" are not entirely lying — there is a zodiacal logic behind it. But they stop at 5% of the picture, ignoring the 95% that makes the real texture of a bond.
The opposition between Eliyah's Venus in Capricorn and Sarah's Sun in Cancer, at 1.1° of orb. Eliyah's Capricorn Venus is a structured, loyal, lasting way of loving, with a restraint that can read as coldness but is really a form of seriousness. This opposition at 1.1° says something precise: what Eliyah looks for in a relationship runs into direct tension with who Sarah is. In practice, Sarah may sometimes wonder whether she truly counts. Eliyah may sometimes feel overwhelmed by a need for expression he never learned to give naturally.
What this changes for you
Doing serious synastry means leaving caricatured oppositions behind and entering the fine reading of a real relationship. It does not erase the difficulties — on the contrary, it names them. But it puts them back in their logic, showing where to lean and where to stay alert.
Good synastry never says "stay together" or "break up." It says: here is what this bond brings, here is what it asks, here are the zones where you will clash, here are the ones where you will lift each other up. The rest is yours to write.
